OFFICIAL UNVEILING: 4th National Cooperative Awards, Symposium & Exhibition Theme and Tagline

Theme: “Leveraging Technology & Innovation for Cooperative Business Growth & Development”

RATIONALE:

You will agree with me that globally, businesses are becoming more competitive daily in respect of how technologies and innovations are being used to disrupt traditional ways of business operations. Therefore, cooperative business should not be lagging behind as we can’t afford to ignore the impact of frontier technologies such as; Internet of Things (IoTs), Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, 3D Printing, Augmented & Virtual Reality (AR & VR), the Cloud, Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Technology in shaping the 21st Century Businesses.  No doubt, Technology and Big Data is driving a paradigm shift in businesses globally and the Cooperative Business Model is not exceptional, although with a pronounced socio-economic mandate, must leverage on emerging technologies and innovations for its sustainable growth and development.

The 2021 UNCTAD Technology and Innovation Report critically examine the possibility of frontier technologies widening existing inequalities by making it worse and creating new digital divides between the technology haves and have-nots. It also pinpoints the national and international policies, instruments and institutional reforms that are needed to create a more equal world of opportunity for all, leaving no one behind. It further argues as well that, Frontier technologies can bring enormous benefits to the lives of people at the bottom of the pyramid as the prospects are immense in e-commerce, transportation, agriculture, health, education, energy and other areas of development. The report shows that frontier technologies already represent a $350 billion market, which could grow to $3.2 trillion by 2025. This offers great opportunities for those ready to catch this technological wave. The major takeaway from the report is that technologies are not deterministic. We can harness their potential for the common good, and we as Cooperatives, a formidable force in sustainable development have an obligation to do so.

Consequently, Cooperative Leaders and major Stakeholders within the ecosystem must prepare for the profound and swift technological change that will profoundly rock our markets and societies. We need pursue technology and innovation policies appropriate to our economic, social and environmental conditions. Hence, building digital skills among members, and the employees, and closing digital divides is paramount, more so, improve upon and develop their own knowledge and skills on relevant technologies and new innovations to key into today’s global village, its businesses as it benefits our individual cooperative societies and the cooperative movement at large.

Hence, the CRASoN, in organizing its 4th National Cooperative Awards, Symposium & Exhibition this year, has come with a titled tagline “The Frontliners – Abuja 2022” and a theme; “Leveraging Technology & Innovation for Cooperative Business Growth and Development” alongside several topical discussions around sustainable development and frontier tech and innovations from a Panel of Experts in these fields, to lead the conversation of optimizing the current technological revolution to reduce gaps that hold back genuinely inclusive and sustainable development. New technologies hold the promise of the future, from climate action and better health to more democratic and inclusive societies. Therefore, participants at this year’s event will not only benefit through enhanced capacity on Digital Platforms and deep understanding of emerging Technologies for Cooperative Business Growth and Development but also gained new perspective, new frontiers on the shift in technology as it affects the future of Cooperative Businesses Globally, in Africa, and Nigeria in particular.

NCC to deepen broadband penetration with licences for MVNOs

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), is set to introduce a licencing framework for the establishment of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) in Nigeria, which will lead to the massive penetration of broadband services to the unserved and underserved areas of the country.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), is set to introduce a licencing framework for the establishment of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) in Nigeria, which will lead to the massive penetration of broadband services to the unserved and underserved areas of the country.

The commission has also opened communications with a European firm that is offering grants and loans to support broadband infrastructure deployment as part of digital economy development in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the commission identified the inability of infracos to raise takeoff capital to commence infrastructure deployment, the failure of state governments to honour the agreement with stakeholders to peg the right of way (RoW) at N145/meter and the action of some State Governments, cancelling existing RoW and awarding exclusive RoW to one company in the states, are impeding broadband penetration in the country.

Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof Umar Danbatta, who disclosed this at National Strategic Mobilisation for the actualisation of National Broadband Target of 70 percent organized by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), in Abuja, observed that the outright refusal of some states to even discuss RoW with licensed regional infracos, failure of mobile network operators to sign off-take agreements with the licensed infracos – that would have facilitated their access to loan facilities, compounded the issues.

He stated that there are inequitable licence conditions against the infracos who are required to use higher specifications and standards for deployment of infrastructure adding that the Commission is already addressing the issue.

Danbatta noted that challenges impeding the actualisation of the 70 per cent broadband penetration target in the NNBP are not insurmountable as the plethora of initiatives by the commission, if given the required impetus, can push broadband penetration to well over 80 per cent before 2025.

He said: ” Other challenges Impeding the attainment of the broadband target include the insecurity in many parts of the country, lack of adequate publicity, sensitisation of critical stakeholders, failure of government to plough back part of proceeds of spectrum fees into infrastructure development, since the inception of telecom liberalisation in 2001.”

The NCC boss said that the Commission has issued 5G spectrum licenses to two successful bidders (MTN Nigeria Limited and Mafab Communications Ltd) and this will contribute to a massive leap in Broadband penetration in
the country.

Earlier, ATCON President, Ikechukwu Nnamani said that the event was put together to have a conversation between the government and critical stakeholders in the various segments of the Nigerian Telecom and ICT sector with a view to proffering lasting solutions to issues that are likely to constitute an obstacle to the actualization of National Broadband Target before the expiration of the National Broadband Plan 2020-2025.

In his remark, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami noted that the Federal Government’s Broadband Plan to achieve 70 per cent broadband penetration by 2025 is hinged on the four pillars of infrastructure, policy, demand drivers, and funding.

Pantami, who was represented by the Deputy Chairman of the National Broadband Plan Initiative, Mallam Abdul Gambo Usman stated that the Federal Government plans to force down the cost of data to N390 per gigabyte of data while ensuring 70 percent of Nigerians have access to data.

SAVINGS

Saving is the practice of putting aside part of your current earnings for future use.

Some of the factors to consider while deciding on where to save:
* Safety
* Access/Ease of use
* Deposit requirements

* Terms of use
* Cost
* Liquidity
* Interest

So how can one get money to save?

* Set aside a portion of your current income
* Cut down costs (Household expenditures, debt payments and optional expenses).

INVESTMENT

Investing is putting your money to use so as to allow it to grow. An investment can be in form of property such as livestock, land, business or shares and bonds from which you can earn profits. (Thread)

Questions to ask before making an investment;

How does the investment work? – Do you understand the investment well enough to explain it to someone else?

What are your goals? – Are you looking for safety,income or growth? Or both growth and income?

what are the risks of this investment? – Are you comfortable taking these risks?

How much do you expect to earn on this investment? Is this realistic?

How long do you plan to invest? Is this a short,medium or long-term investment?

What are the costs to buy,hold and sell the investment? – And will you pay taxes on the money you earn?

What other investments do you have already? – How does this investment fit with your other investments? How will it change your asset mix?

FG MAKES HEALTH INSURANCE COMPULSORY FOR EMPLOYERS

The Federal Government has mandated all employers and employees in public, private, and informal sectors to have access to health insurance.

This development came when the Federal Government noted that only states with established health insurance schemes and contributory schemes would benefit from the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), signed the National Health Insurance Authority Bill 2021 last week.

Buhari’s signing of the new Act is part of the moves by the FG to ensure that Nigeria achieves Universal Health Coverage, a Sustainable Development Goal by 2030.

Under the previous Act, states were required to pay a 50 percent counterpart fund to access the total fund for the BHCPF.

The newly signed law by the President repeals the National Health Insurance Scheme Act 2004.

Section 13, subsection 8 of the newly signed Act, provided that. Similarly, section 14, subsections 1 and 2, stated that “Subject to the provisions of this Act, every person resident in Nigeria shall be required to obtain health insurance.

Residents under this act include all employers and employees in public and private sectors with five staff and above, informal sector employees, and all other residents of Nigeria.

“Every state that has established a State Health Insurance or Contributory Scheme and complies with this Act’s requirements shall be eligible to participate in the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund as established under the National Health Act and its guidelines.”

The sponsor of the bill, Dr. Yahaya Oloriegbe, representing Kwara State Senatorial District in his lead debate, noted that “the bill would provide for a robust, affordable and sustainable financial mechanism for health. The bill will enhance the ability of Nigeria to achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030”.

He said, “This new law was meticulously written to ensure compliance in order to ensure that everyone who lives in this country enjoys basic healthcare services.

Speaking in an interview with newsmen, a former council member of the NHIS and Chief Executive Officer of the Ultimate Health Management Services, Lekan Ewenla, noted that the new law was meticulously written to ensure strict compliance and ensure that Nigerians, most especially the vulnerable ones, get access to healthcare services.

“The NHIS has been strengthened as a regulatory authority. They will go all out to ensure strict compliance. Just like the old Act, states that do not have a contributory scheme or refuse to domesticate the bill won’t enjoy the benefits. It is however important that states realise the importance of domesticating this law so that citizens, most especially the vulnerable, can enjoy the services.

The new law repeals the National Health Insurance Act, which has been in existence since 2004.“While the former law focused on just the formal sector, the new law focuses also not just on the formal sector but the informal sector. Statutorily, every employer of labour should pay 10 percent of basic salaries as medical allowances which are to be converted as premium for workforce.

”It will be recalled that the NHIS Act had sought to alleviate poverty in the country by reducing avoidable deaths, ensuring quality health services, and preventing capital flight by those patronising foreign hospitals while also contributing to the nation’s economic development.

The scheme has continued to grow at a snail’s pace, leaving more than 93 percent of Nigerians without access to health insurance.

The NHIS ensures the pooling of funds from different sectors of the economy, with many people contributing money. The essence is to guarantee free health care for the contributors whenever the need arises.

PONMO BUSINESS IN NIGERIA (Complete Guide)

Ponmo business is a very lucrative business. Some persons who are into this business are living large because of the huge amount of profit associated with it. Whether it is sold in kanda form (dry skin or salted skin) or as Ponmo the gains in both are highly commendable.

Ponmo is a special delicacy in Nigeria that is eaten by many from the South to the North, East and the West. The rich, the poor, adult, children and the youths eats it. In fact poor homes used Ponmo to cook in place of red meat. It is commonly eaten by the Yoruba’s. The taste and the feelings gotten while eating Ponmo is something to desire as you will want to eat it again and again.

IS PONMO HARMFUL?
Sometimes ago (2014), Vanguard reported that the minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina has called for a stronger check on the consumption of Ponmo.

His reasons were; so that farmers can be able to make bigger profit because they would turn the hides and skin into leather. He also said that the satisfactory level of production achieved in the poultry and swine segments will soon by stretch to reach other commodities such as beef, dairy, micro livestock and animal by products such as leather, bones, hides and skin.

ALTHOUGH
There has been an outcry by some persons especially the health institutions (medical expert) that the consumption of Ponmo is unhealthy. They condemned the claim that eating of Ponmo by the elderly is good as they cannot eat red meat.

According to them animal skin has not yet been medically proven to have nutritional value. They believe that it is actually unhealthy to eat Ponmo.
Others argued that Ponmo itself does not cause any harm to the body but the manner at which they are processed or preserved. Some sellers use harmful chemicals to preserve them. While some uses tyre to burn them. But all things being equal if proper hygienic conditions are carried out then Ponmo should be an interesting delicacy to consume. Even with the huge cry many people are still consuming Ponmo in fact in 2014 when there was a rumour that the Federal Government of Nigeria was going to ban the consumption of Ponmo so many people were angry at such intentions.

REASONS WHY PEOPLE CONSUMES PONMO
Ponmo can be very nice when prepared with African Salad, pepper Ponmo or for pottage foods. In the southern part of Nigeria Akwa Ibom/Cross River States almost every home uses Ponmo to cook soup. In fact your soap is not complete without Ponmo especially if you are cooking afang or edikang ikong soup. People prefer Ponmo for diverse reasons:
Age-wise: most elderly people prefers Ponmo because of health, they say beef is not healthy for them.
Income: others prefer it because of their low income such that Ponmo becomes an alternative to red meat.
Taste: still others eat it because of the taste and feeling when eaten.

Business: people buy Ponmo for business purposes as wholesalers or retailers.

BENEFITS OF PONMO
Ponmo is a diet rich in fibre which helps in stabilizing blood sugar levels as it slows down the rate of glucose absorption into the body. It also helps to lower blood cholesterol levels, which helps in reducing the risk of heart disease contrary to the opinion that it does not give or add anything to the body. It helps in the digestion process but it should be supplemented with other nutrients while using them for cooking since their nutrient is small.

Cow skin is very high in collagen a protein which is good in holding bones and skin tissue in place.

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER PONMO BUSINESS
Ponmo is high in demand. Check those who are dealing on Ponmo business they hardly carry them back home, there is always market for it.
Ponmo business is very profitable you can be making between #2,000-#3,000 from one piece assuming you are selling 100 pieces every week do the mathematics and thank me later. It can be more than that depending on the season and location.
It provides employment. The job that is in Ponmo business requires people (workers) at every point in time, ranging from the loaders, drivers, roasters, sellers etc.

HOW MUCH IS NEEDED FOR PONMO BUSINESS
Like I always say, it depends on the amount at your disposal but #100,000 can start Ponmo business in smaller scale while as low as #10,000 can start the Ponmo business. Ponmo are filled with 3 pieces or 2 pieces depending on the size in a bag. The same size are put together and sold accordingly. Size 9 goes for #9,000 while size 5 goes for #5,000. I will advice you go for the bigger size because it moves market the more. Depending on your location, transportation is #1,000 for a piece. They are mostly carried by trucks.

HOW TO PRESERVE PONMO
The fresh ones are usually wrapped with much salt though medically it is not advisable so use a little salt on the fresh Ponmo, transport them immediately after purchase and sell them off once they land at your location. Apart from medical reasons too much salt on the Ponmo will break or pieces the Ponmo. The dealers have already dried ones which where dried under sun, those ones can last until you are ready to use them.

For the people dealing on Ponmo, burn the Ponmo immediately you purchase them. If they are properly burnt, they can stay for more than a month, you can only soak them in water when you are ready to sell them if not properly burnt Ponmo will rotten and maggots will feed on them. Note once water touches the roasted Ponmo you just have to make use of them if not they will spoil.

WHEN TO SELL PONMO
You can sell them at anytime of the day but the best time is very early in the morning from 5a.m when restaurants, hotels, bars and retailers will come to buy in volume for the days use. Within 1-2hrs you are already on your way home.

WHERE TO BUY KANDA/PONMO
They are mostly sold in the northern part of the country especially in Kano and Adamawa states. The dealers in Adamawa sometimes purchases them from Cameroon while those in Kano purchases theirs from Niger.

MARKETABILITY
Locate restaurants, hotels, institutions and individuals to sell for. Join association of Ponmo sellers so you can sell where others are selling as they don’t allow non members to sell with them.
Supply to individuals or market women after meeting them for negotiations. Reduce your price from what others are selling so as to buy the acceptance of buyers. Always make them available to buyers so they don’t run short of it.

Advertise your Ponmo business both online and offline.

CHALLENGES IN PONMO BUSINESS
Trucks breaking down on the way sometimes more than a week causes delay in the business. Capital to go into Ponmo business in a large scale is also a major challenge.
