In a remarkable show of commitment to youth inclusion and community development, Irepodun Egbasowapo Obada Cooperative Multipurpose Union Limited hosted a grand celebration in honor of Children’s Day on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at St. James Primary School, Egbe Ijebu, Ogun State, Nigeria.
This event made history, positioning the Union as the first cooperative body in Ogun State to officially mark Children’s Day in line with the United Nations’ declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives. Although Irepodun Egbasowapo has hosted Children’s Day events in previous years, the 2025 edition stood out for its scale, organization, and significance.
Spearheaded by the passionate leadership of the Union President, Alhaja Cooperator Adeusi Selimot, FICP, the event was designed to uplift and inspire the next generation. In her inspiring message to the children, she stated:
“To every child, may your dreams be as big as your imagination, and may you have the courage to chase them.”
The celebration featured a variety of engaging activities, including debates, quizzes, spelling bees, choreography, cultural performances, drama, indigenous poetry (ewi) in Ijebu and Egba dialects, and exciting games. Talented participants who excelled in these competitions were rewarded with gifts and cash prizes, highlighting the Union’s dedication to encouraging creativity and excellence.
The program commenced with spirited renditions of the Cooperative Anthem, Ogun State Anthem, Nigerian National Anthem, and the official Irepodun 2 welcome song, performed by the enthusiastic children.
Welcoming attendees, Prince Abimbola Adewale, Head of Irepodun Egbasowapo 2, expressed deep appreciation to all dignitaries, participating societies, and guests for their continuous support.
During the goodwill messages, Mr. Olatunji Alaka, President of the Ado-Odo/Ota/Ifo/Ewekoro Branch of OGSCOFED Limited, delivered an impactful address highlighting the crucial role of cooperatives in socioeconomic development. He began by giving thanks to God for the opportunity to witness the day’s celebration and went on to commend the organizers for their dedication to the children.
In his words, Mr. Alaka emphasized that: “Cooperatives offer more value and impact than commercial banks because they are rooted in community, trust, and shared prosperity.”
He spoke on the core values of cooperatives, such as self-help, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity, explaining how these principles are vital for nation-building. He encouraged parents and community members to instill cooperative values in children from a young age, as a means of nurturing responsible and financially literate citizens.
To further support the event, Mr. Alaka generously donated ₦20,000 on behalf of his branch, a gesture that was warmly applauded by all in attendance.
Mr. Badejo Adeyemi, President of the Ogun State Youth Cooperative (the youth arm of Ogun State Cooperative Federation Limited), commended the Union for championing such a groundbreaking event. He urged parents to introduce their children to cooperatives and proposed the creation of a youth cooperative society under Irepodun Egbasowapo’s guidance. According to him:
“Youth cooperatives are not just about business—they are platforms for inclusion, innovation, and sustainable development. Let us open our doors and mentor the next generation.”
Also in attendance were notable dignitaries, including Mrs. Oladipo, Assistant Director, Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives (Odogbolu Local Government Office), as well as presidents of member societies under the Irepodun Egbasowapo Union.

In his vote of thanks, Mr. Adewusi expressed heartfelt appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, especially the cooperative societies, guests, and children whose enthusiasm made the day unforgettable.
Through this initiative, Irepodun Egbasowapo Obada Cooperative has set a new benchmark in cooperative-led child development, reaffirming its dedication to nurturing the future and building an inclusive and sustainable cooperative movement.
